ALEX MWAKIDEU CELEBRATES ONE YEAR OF SOBRIETY
Alex Mwakideu is now a year sober!
The radio presenter celebrated the big milestone on October 27, “It’s official I am now one year sober! Niendelee Nisiendelee?”
Mwakideu explained he quit alcohol in honour of his mother’s memory following her passing in 2019.
He confessed he would spend a minimum of Sh8,000 per bottle, “I used to drink a lot of alcohol. I was drinking frequently and my mother used to tell me, ‘Just stop because what will this alcohol do for you?’ And not only her but even my biological father used tell me. I remember one day he told me, there are many good things in the world and bad things, why are you looking for bad things?
I loved whiskey a lot, and the one bottle I could buy was about Sh8,000 at wines and spirits, by the time I was quitting alcohol I was drinking a whole bottle myself. A whiskey bottle at a bar was Sh11,000 and above.
But my father used to tell me, ‘alcohol is Sh11,000 and a packet of milk is Sh50. Now, what does this add to you? This gives you a lot of sleep, you do not return home early, your children do not see you, you can quarrel with your wife for sleeping outside, you may have an accident. The other option is better health and money.’ He was giving me these examples; every day I would say one day I will stop it.
I had made a promise that one day I would stop and my mother would see and be happy but she passed away before I did. But I hope wherever she is, she is happy because I quit. All the bottles that were at home, I gave it away to those who are still drinking. Now I am heading to the sixth month of staying sober.”
