DJ PINYE ON CARING FOR BROTHER WITH CEREBRAL PALSY
DJ Pinye, one of Kenya’s iconic entertainment figures, has recounted how the unexpected loss of his mother left his family grappling with new responsibilities, particularly caring for his brother, who has cerebral palsy.
According to Pinye, his mother had shouldered the burden of taking care of his brother alone for over 30 years, refusing assistance. “All her responsibilities suddenly fell to us. Mum had been the sole caregiver for my brother, who had cerebral palsy. Over 30 years, she cared for him without help, and now we were utterly unprepared to step into her shoes.”
Reflecting on the aftermath, DJ Pinye spoke candidly about the guilt he felt. “Our first attempts at lifting him accidentally fractured his arm. Our disastrous efforts led to hiring a caregiver. A stark reminder of my mum’s strength & resilience. I felt so guilty for never helping. We tried, but her refusal to accept aid meant that she’d chosen to shoulder this burden alone—perhaps as a way to cope. Looking back, I realised that her quiet sadness was the pain she’d endured—watching him suffer in silence.”
DJ Pinye urged others to mend any broken ties with their parents while they still have the chance, “If you’re not on good terms with your parents, fix it. When they’re gone, It hurts more than could be described. I’m glad I fixed my relationship with Mum. The only thing I can’t mend is her absence.”
