‘I WASN’T READY TO BE A MOTHER’ MAYONDE REVEALS
Renowned Kenyan singer and songwriter Mayonde has opened up about journey into motherhood, her battle with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), and how becoming a mother has reshaped her personal and professional outlook on life.
In a candid revelation, Mayonde described her surprise at conceiving naturally despite her PCOS diagnosis. “I have PCOS, so I always knew that if I wanted to have a baby, I’d have to keep trying. But it just happened, and it was a surprise,” she said.
Adding, “I didn’t feel ready to be a mum—I was married for 10 years, already in my 30s, but I still felt like a child. I never saw myself as a mum, but I was surprised that God saw me as a mother and gave me a child, which was really beautiful.”
However, the early days of motherhood brought challenges. Reflecting on her first weeks as a new mother, Mayonde admitted, “Eight weeks into mummy-hood was the ghetto. I had a C-section, and the pain was immense. No one tells you that on day four, there’s a big drop in your hormones. The sleep deprivation, the healing, and feeling like you’re neglecting your needs were so hard. But it gets better.”
Balancing her new role as a mother with her artistic career has been a transformative experience for the singer. “As much as I was bringing new life into the world, God was also breathing new life into my broken dreams,” she said. “Yes, I have the gift of music, but maybe it’s not about pursuing a traditional music career. My child was a catalyst for leaning into God more and seeking wisdom. I’m an artist in recovery, figuring out my stride as a mother.”
