HOW CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT AND BETRAYAL LED JANET MBUGUA TO FIND GOD

By  |

Media personality, author, and actress Janet Mbugua has shared how challenges and betrayal led her to spiritual awakening.

In a candid interview with Cheptoek Boyo on Buzz Central Podcast, opened up about how her spiritual journey began with seeds planted in childhood but blossomed during a period of hardship. “Character development led me to spirituality,” she shared. “A lot of us grew up in some kind of spirituality, going to Sunday school, so the seed was planted. But over time, you hear your mom or your dad or your uncle and auntie say, ‘Just pray.’”

She explained that becoming a mother and navigating life’s challenges played an important role. “I became a mom, and life happens. I faced all these new challenges. And I found myself going back to God.”

In 2022, Janet experienced a defining moment. She recounted a time when she felt betrayed by someone she considered a friend. “I was going through so much of a change in my life, and it was hard. It was hard on my soul, it was hard on my spirit. And I promise you, I feel like this was an encounter, because I was sitting on my bed. I had just picked my sons from school, and I got off a call with somebody who I thought was a friend, but ended up actually really betraying my trust. And I was just sitting in shock.”

Adding, “I just heard a voice say, ‘Go to Karura. I’ll meet you there.’ You know those things that you hear, and you’re like, what did I hear? Actually, it was very calm, very quiet.”

She heeded the call and took her sons to Karura Forest, where she experienced a spiritual moment. “As I was walking, this voice said, ‘You’ve given too many people power over you. Why are you giving man power over your life? You need to lean on me.’”

Mbugua described the encounter as life-changing. “I cannot explain to you how that encounter in 2022 led to me completely making decisions that I have to date. It hasn’t always been easy. I think there’s always a period of wilderness, but I truly believe that was God just saying, ‘You need to get back to me now.’ In 2024, I said, ‘Okay, you’re gonna have to try and take this seriously.’ It’s still a journey. But I would say I found Him in a big way, and I’m pursuing Him more as I go along.”

She also shared how a gentle yet powerful voice guided her to stop drinking in December 2021. “I was just at home at my folks’ place, and I was holding a glass of wine. I put it down, and the voice said, ‘That’s your last drink.’ I remember being like, ‘Huh?’ So the two voices for me were very gentle and a reminder. I believe that’s how I began to see God, because I’m like, it couldn’t have been anyone else. It was powerful, it was affirming, and it was about releasing what no longer served me.”
