Renowned environmentalist and African Heritage House owner Alan Donovan is dead. According to African Heritage House management, the 83-year-old died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday morning, December 5 at his home in Mlolongo, Machakos County.

Donovan travelled to Kenya over 50 years ago and together with Kenya’s first vice-president Joseph Murumbi, he founded the African Heritage Gallery and created the African Heritage House.

African Heritage House is a showpiece of African culture and heritage and contains an invaluable collection of African art. The estate is a combination of the mud architectures from across Africa and is available for tours, meals and dinners. Following Donovan’s demise, business at the estate will be suspended for the next three days to mourn him. His body has been taken to Lee Funeral Home, as burial arrangements start.

Machakos County governor Alfred Mutua took to Twitter to mourn him, “It with great sadness that I pass my condolences to the family of Alan Donovan, a great pioneer of the arts. He passed away this morning at his home in Mlolongo, Machakos County. From African Heritage to protection of the environment, Donovan was a force that touched lives. RIP.”
