AWARD WINNING KENYAN FINE ARTIST MARY OGEMBO PASSES AWAY

The art world is mourning the loss of Mary Ogembo, an internationally acclaimed Kenyan fine artist known for her vibrant portrayals of African women and her contributions to visual arts. 

Ogembo passed away on October 27, 2024, in Canada. In a statement, renowned artist Patrick Mukabi took to social media to announce her passing, “It is with very deep regret and sorrow that we announce the passing of Mary Ogembo. We are praying for peace and comfort for her family and the artistic community which she was a great part of. We shall be reaching out to groups willing to support her family lay her to rest.” 

Ogembo, celebrated for her unique approach to depicting the lives, traditions, and resilience of African women, practiced as a full-time artist since 1998. Her work, marked by layers of earthy, vibrant colours and an expressive use of palette knives, captured themes of womanhood, creativity, and the rich diversity of African culture. “In my practice as a painter, my main theme is ‘the African woman’…I paint women in their occasions, fashion, creativity, their physical endowments, and everyday activities,” Ogembo explained. 

Her art resonated with audiences globally, leading to exhibitions in numerous countries. She was recognised with various awards and residencies, affirming her influential role within the art community. Besides her remarkable paintings, Ogembo’s talents extended to wooden sculptures, mural art, and traditional African motifs, showcasing her versatility and commitment to her craft. 

Ogembo’s contributions have left a lasting impact on the artistic community, and her legacy will continue to inspire future generations. Memorial and support arrangements are currently underway to help her family lay her to rest.
