KENYAN FILM RAFIKI SCREENED AT TIFF

The 43rd edition of the Toronto International Film Festival kicked off with Kenyan gay film, Rafiki screening as part of the opening night line-up . The movie’s director,Wanuri Kahiu, shared the news via social media.

“We are so excited to be here representing the movie. I’m so happy,” Wanuri said. She also revealed that she would be hanging out with the International film programmer for TIFF and the Miami Film Festival, Kiva Reardon.

“So, I show up at the 1st RAFIKI screening and my festival bestie @kiva.reardon is wearing a matching dress! #FilmBridesmaids #Twinning #GoldenGirls. Great night! Thank you Toronto! Special shoutout to @ilare_official for the fancy clothes!!!!” she added.

Her comments section was filled with friends and fans congratulating her while others wanted to know whether the movie would be screening in the U.S over the weekend.

Rafiki sparked controversy in Kenya this year for its gay storyline between two girls. It also became the first Kenyan film to be screened at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in France.

Ezekiel Mutua, Kenya Film and Classification Board chairman, went on to ban the movie from showing in any Kenyan cinemas due to its “immoral” content. The move by KFCB led to reactions by international directors and producers.

Cate Blanchett, who is acted in Thor Ragnarok and has won many awards also came in support of Rafiki saying that it should not have been banned.
