CHRIS KIRUBI THREATENED ME, MUTHONI DRUMMER QUEEN EXPLAINS WHY BLANKETS & WINE CANCELLED CONTRACT WITH CAPITAL FM

By  |

Kenyan rapper and founder of Blankets & Wine Muthoni Ndonga popularly known as Muthoni Drummer Queen has revealed the reason why Blankets &Wine ceased the partnership with Capital FM.

Sitting down with Cleaning the Airwaves (CTA), Muthoni said the decision to leave Capital FM was made by her colleagues, “It was not my decisions but the people who had grown as our interns into full colleagues. We had real deliberation and we had split 50/50. The thing for me that was frustrating was saying that Kenyan music wasn’t growing as a result of Blankets & Wine.

I wasn’t serving what I came here to do. If Anto Neosoul is an opening act to Mi Casa then I’m doing something wrong and we felt that was the message being communicated.”

Muthoni adds on one occasion while at Capita FM offices for a meeting, she met Chris Kirubi that’s when the renown businessman threatened her, “That takes me in some years before in 2011, I was at Capital for my monthly meeting, I was leaving the Programme Controller’s (PC) office and Mr. Chris Kirubi was the chairman, I guess he was on the floor that day kicking it, sitting at a corner.

Then someone said, ‘chairman that’s the girl for Blankets & Wine over there.’ I was like okay cool I walked over to the corner and shook his hand.

And then he is like ‘this Blankets & Wine you know you need to make me a partner, you know the things I have done? without us what could you have been? Let me tell you if you don’t agree I can just do it. Do you know how many boards I sit in?

God bears me witness every guy who worked at Capital at the time knew. He was not talking to me, he addressed the floor, he dressed me down in front of all his employees. Somoina the PC is the one who came and saved the day.

I was just on the brink of tears. That was my one and only interaction with Chris Kirubi all my life. He threatened me in front of everybody at Capital that if I didn’t make him my partner, he can do it in a heartbeat, he knows everybody, he has the radio, he has the media, he knows the sponsors and there is nothing I can do about it.

How I got out of it was interesting I told him with partnerships it really depends, there has to be a match of ethic and the vision. But he’s like yeah, what will you do without the media? Kirubi dressed me down in front of everybody.

I bet you he doesn’t remember that incident but I do. That was a person with power and influence who had the ability to mentor me into something greater.”
