CELEBRITIES WHO WILL BE ON THE POLLS COME AUGUST 9
As Kenya braces up for the General Elections set for August 9, 2022, the political temperatures are high, and the political scope has witnessed significant changes in the types of personalities who have declared interests in various political seats.
Politics is no longer a game of seasoned and career politicians. Even celebrities can enact policies and serve the people. Buzz Central looks at celebrities who decided to try their luck in politics and won party nominations or were handed direct tickets as the first step towards winning the actual polls.
DNG
Celebrated media personality and entertainer Davidson Ngibuini, alias DNG, is eyeing the Woodley Kenyatta Golf Course MCA seat on Deputy President William Ruto’s UDA party ticket.
Taking to Instagram after sailing through the hotly contested party primaries, DNG thanked his supporters for the loyal support affirming that he will continue to push for change, and when he ultimately clinches the MCA seat, he will stage a servant leadership to ensure his people represented well in government. “I would like to pass my gratitude to you for nominating me to vie for the position of MCA in the upcoming General Elections. I am humbled and honoured by your confidence in me to fly our UDA Party’s Flag in Woodley Kenyatta Golf Course Ward.”
He expressed optimism about winning the elections in August by beating his political rivals like Gabriel Kagundu (Gabu) of the ANC party. “I am confident that we will be successful in jointly pushing my Theory Of Change, my Campaign Manifesto, the 4 Core Pillars therein the UDA Bottom-Up Economic Model.”
Jalang’o
Former Kiss 100 radio presenter and comedian Phelix Odiwour, famously known as Jalang’o – won the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) nominations, and he will be vying for the Langa’ta parliamentary seat in the General Elections.
The radio personality outfoxed his competitors in the party primaries as he finished first with 3,509 votes. The second hopeful, Oscar Omoke, who had initially posed a threat to his political dream, was beaten pants down as he only garnered 1,612 votes.
Jalang’o thanked his supporters for believing in him and making him pass the first test as he looks forward to crossing swords with incumbent MP Nixon Korir of UDA on August 9. “It is with great honour and humility that; I Phelix ‘Jalang’o’ Odiwuor, accept the will of thousands of Langata constituency voters that I fly the ODM flag in the Member of National Assembly race in the forthcoming election. Thank you for believing in my ‘Utu na Watu’ campaign.”
Refigah
Yusuf Noah popularly known as Refigah, is a celebrated music executive and Grandpa Records founder, which housed popular musicians Visita, Sosuun, and Kenrazy.
He will be vying for Kibra parliamentary seat under Democratic Action Party-Kenya (DAP-K) in the August polls after he was handed a nomination ticket on April 14 by party leader Wafula Wamunyinyi in Nairobi.
“Today, the official journey for liberating the people of Kibra begins. We officially received our DAP-K nomination certificate to signify a new beginning full of hope for the great people of Kibra. Our aim is to deliver to the people of Kibra irrespective of their religion, tribe, or political inclination. This is because, as people of Kibra, we are known to speak in unison, which is a great asset that we must continue investing in and enjoying,” he said.
Refigah is set to unseat incumbent Kibra lawmaker Imran Okoth, who was elected in a mini poll after his brother Ken Okoth succumbed to cancer in 2020 while he was still in office.
Gabu
Gabriel ‘Gabu’ Kagundu, famous for his nicknames Buganya and Bugubugu, will be vying for Woodley Kenyatta Golf Course Ward. MCA seat in the oncoming polls.
Speaking after he was handed Amani National Congress (ANC) nomination ticket on Monday, April 24, by virtue of winning party primaries, the P-Unit music group member thanked his supporters for believing in him, urging them to vote him as their MCA for them to realise change and have a taste of good leadership. He shared a photo of him and party leader Musalia Mudavadi with the caption:
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank my people for the overwhelming support that you have shown me during this journey. You have entrusted me with the responsibility of representing you as your candidate of choice for the MCA Woodley/Kenyatta Golf Course seat. I do not take this for granted, and I am grateful for the far we have come as a team. Your support is everything. We are grateful to God for the favour that He has shown us during these campaigns.
As we move to the last lap of this journey, I know that we shall continue to move with strength, confidence, faith, and we shall finally come out as winners.” He wrote.
Gabu will face off with his counterpart Davidson Ngibuini alias DNG of UDA, and it is speculated to be a neck-to-neck contest considering that both parties are affiliates of Kenya Kwanza Alliance.
Robert Alai
Controversial Kahawatungu blogger Robert Alai clinched the ODM ticket to contest for the Kileleshwa MCA seat in the forthcoming polls.
He was issued a nomination ticket after slightly winning the primaries by garnering 638 votes against 545 votes of his closest competitor Junior Tollo. He thanked the people of Kileleshwa for according him a chance to serve them. “Thank you, ODM. Thank you Baba Raila Odinga. Thank you, Wanakileleshwa.” He said after being declared the winner.
