MEDIA PERSONALITY CIKU MUIRURI WARNS PARENTS OVER EXPLICIT CONTENT ON TIKTOK
Media personality Ciku Muiruri took her Facebook page to warn parents about a new trend on TikTok.
According to Ciku the platform is no longer for kids, “Parents, Tiktok has taken a dark turn and is not the harmless place it once was. People are posting devil worship videos, mothers are asking for pay to get their underage daughters to do questionable sexually explicit dance moves and apparently at around 2-3 am, its a porn site. And I’m not talking about foreigners, these are Kenyans. God have mercy on us all.”
Last week, TikTok announced new well-being features for teens, families and its broader community. The entertainment platform is improving its screen time controls with more custom options, introducing new default settings for teen accounts, and expanding Family Pairing with more parental controls.
Cormac Keenan, TikTok Head of Trust and Safety, says new features will help teens manage their time on TikTok better. “In the coming weeks, every account belonging to a user under 18 years will automatically be set to a 60-minute daily screen time limit. If the 60-minute limit is reached, teens will be prompted to enter a passcode to continue watching, requiring them to make an active decision to extend that time,” he explains.
“We want to provide families with controls to make decisions based on their individual needs, and we also recognise the importance of doing so with careful consideration for both parents and teens. Over the next few weeks, we’ll continue to engage with parenting, youth, and civil society organisations to design this feature,” adds Keenan.
