ELIUD KIPCHOGE MOURNS THE DEATH OF KELVIN KIPTUM

Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge took to social media to mourn the death of world record marathon runner Kelvin Kiptum, who died in a car crash.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic passing of the marathon record holder and rising star Kelvin Kiptum. An athlete who had a whole life ahead of him to achieve incredible greatness. I offer my deepest condolences to his young family. May God comfort you during this trying time. Rest in peace Kelvin.” Kipchoge wrote on X,

Kiptum and his Rwandese coach Garvais Hakizimana tragically lost their lives in a fatal accident along the Eldoret-Kaptagat Road late Sunday night. The accident occurred around 11 Pm claiming the lives of Kiptum and Hakizimana on the spot, while another occupant was rushed to the hospital, according to Elgeyo Marakwet County Commander Peter Mulinge.

Kiptum exploded onto the marathon scene on October 8, 2023, when he stunned the world by smashing Kipchoge’s record. Kiptum shaved 34 seconds off Kipchoge’s time from Berlin 2022, with a time of 2:00:35, winning the Chicago marathon.
