KENYAN YOUTUBER KING ADRI SPEAKS ON FACING CHALLENGES IN THE UK
Popular Kenyan Youtuber King Adri, has opened up about relocating from Kenya to the UK.
Through his social media, Adri shed light on his shattered dreams, “Have you ever seen a dream shattered right in front of your eyes? I got to the UK from Africa. I thought that since I am from Africa, my life will be sorted and I will be a different person by now. I would have my own land, you know, build a house in Africa. But when I came here I realised everything is the opposite of what I was expecting.”
Arriving in the UK, Adri’s expectations were met with a harsh reality check. Living with his mzungu father, he encountered financial struggles and cultural adjustments.
“When I was 20 years old, I was introduced to my father for the first time and he brought me to the UK. I got here and went to college, but I couldn’t continue with college. I remember for six months I was living and sleeping on a sofa in one tiny room with my dad. He didn’t have money as I was expecting, he’s a white man. Life is not always as we think and expect.”
Adding, “My dad said I had to get a job. My English was terrible. I hated my accent. I couldn’t even understand what English people were saying. The mentality that we have from Africa. We think that for us to get a job we have to finish university or college. But in the UK, people work from the age of 15 or 16. I’m from Malindi in Kenya and we don’t have anything like that.”
The content creator found himself taking a role of caretaking, “I started working in a care home where you look after people who’ve got disabilities. You clean their bum, you wash the toilets, you clean up after them. It is a job that requires patience and somebody who actually cares. That is why I don’t have a problem because I care about people.”
