INDONESIAN EMBASSY HOSTS VIBRANT CULTURAL FASHION SHOW
In a colourful celebration of culture and heritage, the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Nairobi hosted the ‘Enchanting Indonesia’ event at the Indonesian ambassador’s residence on September 3, 2024.
Organized by Mrs. Zulfah N. Saripudin, the wife of Indonesia’s Ambassador, along with the Ladies Association of the Indonesian Embassy, and American Women Association (AWA). The event was a sensory delight, blending fashion, dance, art, and cuisine to showcase the rich traditions of Indonesia.
Ambassador H.E. Dr. Mohamad Hery Saripudin opened the event, he highlighted the significance of cultural exchange in building mutual understanding and deepening the ties between Indonesia and Kenya. “’Tak Kenal maka Tak Sayang’, Indonesian saying which means “do not know then do not love”. Hope by introducing Indonesian art, culture, and culinary, mutual understanding and friendship are created and it in turn strenghten bonds between Indonesia and Kenya,” Ambassador Hery said.
The festivities kicked off with a video presentation on batik, Indonesia’s iconic fabric art celebrated for its intricate patterns and deep cultural roots. Recognised by UNESCO as a “Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity,” batik was the highlight of a fashion show that featured models draped in both traditional and modern batik designs, showcasing the fabric’s timeless elegance.
Guests were invited to explore unique batik pieces displayed at stands, providing a closer look at the fabric’s detailed craftsmanship. The cultural immersion continued with a mesmerising Balinese dance performance, where an Indonesian national of Balinese heritage, currently residing in Kenya, performed in graceful movements and vibrant costumes.
Guests were also treated to a feast of traditional Indonesian dishes, offering a culinary journey through the archipelago’s diverse flavours. From savoury bites to sweet delicacies, the food provided an extra layer of indulgence, enhancing the overall experience. Enchanting Indonesia successfully transported a piece of Indonesia to Nairobi, creating a memorable day filled with art, dance, and delectable flavours.
