MOI’S GRANDSON JAILED FOR CONTEMPT OF COURT IN CHILD SUPPORT CASE

By  |

A Nakuru court has sentenced Collins Kibet, the grandson of the late President Daniel Moi, to seven days in jail for contempt in a child support case

The ruling, delivered on Thursday evening by Nakuru Principal Magistrate Kipkurui Kibelion, ordered Kibet to be remanded at Nakuru GK Prison for failing to comply with court orders related to the support of his two children

The Magistrate also directed the complainant’s legal team to calculate the total unpaid child support Kibet owes and to provide the defence lawyers with this figure within three days. The case will be mentioned again on September 26, 2024, to confirm whether Kibet has complied with the court’s orders.

Kibet was arrested in Ongata Rongai, Kajiado County, on Wednesday and brought before the court on Thursday. He stands accused of neglecting to provide for his children with his estranged wife, Gladys Jeruto Tagi

Authorities claim that Kibet had been evading arrest for several months before his apprehension. During the hearing, Tagi’s lawyer, Elizabeth Wangari, urged the court to impose civil imprisonment on Kibet for repeatedly ignoring court summons related to the matter. “The arrest warrant for disobeying a lawful decree was issued on June 2, 2022, and to date, he has not complied,Wangari stated. She further explained that attempts to negotiate with Kibet at the Nakuru Central Police Station had been unsuccessful.

Wangari also pointed out that Kibet’s failure to financially support the children had disrupted their education, particularly their enrolment at Mustard Seed International School, causing them significant emotional distress. In defence, Kibet’s lawyer requested more time for his client to meet the court’s demands, citing severe financial constraints and ongoing inheritance disputes involving his father’s and grandfather’s estates.
