MARTHA KARUA OPENS UP ABOUT DIVORCE AND MOTHERHOOD
Celebrated politician and advocate Martha Karua has revealed candid details about her personal life while promoting her memoir, Against The Tide on Citizen TV.
Reflecting on her journey as a single mother and a trailblazing leader, Karua opened up about her divorce, motherhood, and how she balanced her demanding political career with raising two children. “In the 1992 elections, I had already plunged into life as a single mother of two,” she shared. “I campaigned as Martha Njoka. And because my marital status was an issue during elections, I decided to show my detractors a bit of style. So immediately after we were elected, I did the papers for a change of name. I got it gazetted, and by January, I was sworn in as Martha Karua. That was it.”
When asked whether her marriage was rocky, Karua stated, “Every marriage does become rocky because any disagreements can graduate to a big disagreement. It’s up to you to know the good time to walk out.”
Karua also talked about how she juggled politics and motherhood, “Women are brought up to multitask. That’s why you see a woman carrying firewood on her back, a child, a jerry can of water, and something else. At home, she will do so many things, all in one day. We are born multitaskers,” she said.
