LEGAL FRATERNITY MOURNS THE PASSING OF SENIOR COUNSEL JUDY THONGORI
The Kenyan legal fraternity is in mourning following the passing of senior counsel Judy Thongori , a highly respected advocate and trailblazer in family law and human rights. Leaders from across the judiciary and legal profession have paid tribute to her contributions and lasting legacy.
Faith Odhiambo, President of the Law Society of Kenya, shared her condolences, stating, “This morning, the legal fraternity mourns the loss of a distinguished member and beacon of excellence. Judy Thongori SC has been a monument of legal prowess and exemplified all the qualities of a professional North Star. Her noteworthy contributions to family law and human rights are timeless and continue to propagate a learning curve for many in the profession.”
She added, “The legacy she leaves behind will remain an indelible mark of her impact that lives on among us. We condole with all her friends, family, colleagues, and the Senior Counsel Bar for this immense loss. We pray for divine comfort and healing as we contend with this unfortuitous news. May she rest in peace.“

She was a trailblazer in championing women’s rights and significantly impacted the legal landscape in Kenya. Chief Justice Martha Koome highlighted Thongori’s instrumental role in advancing justice for women and children, reflecting on their collaborative efforts during their time at FIDA-Kenya. “I have received with profound sadness the news of the passing of my dear friend and senior counsel, Ms. Judy Thongori, one of Kenya’s most distinguished legal practitioners. Ms. Thongori was a trailblazer in the legal profession and a passionate advocate for justice, particularly in matters affecting families, women, and children.”
Adding, “Her pivotal contributions to advocacy, family law reform, and shaping legal practice at the Family Division of the High Court profoundly impacted the development of family law in Kenya and inspired a generation of legal professionals. On behalf of the Judiciary and on my own behalf, I extend my deepest condolences to her husband, John, her family, friends, and the entire legal fraternity during this difficult time. May her soul rest in eternal peace, and may her legacy continue to inspire us all.”
