‘THERE ARE NOT TWO GENDERS’ ESTHER PASSARIS ADVOCATES FOR DIVERSE GENDER IDENTITIES
Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris has caused a stir on social media after a video of her went viral where she called on society to embrace gender inclusivity.
Speaking during an interview on K24 TV, Passaris dismissed the notion of two gender system and called for greater understanding of diverse gender identities. “They are not two genders, let’s face it,” said Passaris.
Passaris further stated there are families with children whose gender identities differ from traditional norms. “We have intersex children that are born with two sexes or incomplete sexes, and these are children that are requiring our love, our compassion, and our understanding as a society. We have gays, lesbians, and transgender individuals who exist amongst us. And you know, we always keep condemning them.”
She called for a shift in societal attitudes, reminding Kenyans of the importance of compassion and the recognition of diversity within their communities. “It happened even during biblical times, Sodom and Gomorrah. Let God deal with the genders. There are parents out there with children that are of different genders. And they exist even here in Kenya. Coming from the Catholic faith, I heard our Pope say, ‘it may be a sin, but it’s not criminal.’”
Passaris’ statements come in the wake of renewed debates on gender identity sparked by recent comments from U.S. President Donald Trump who said the U.S. government will recognise only two biological sexes as well as to end federal diversity programs.
