MUSICIAN SUZANNA OWIYO MOURNS THE DEATH OF WAFULA CHEBUKATI

Musician Suzanna Owiyo has joined the nation in mourning the passing of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati who died at 11 pm on Thursday.

Owiyo took to social media to share her condolences, “Waking up to this sad news! Wafula Chebukati is no more.. Wah! May his soul rest in peace.” 

Wafula Chebukati’s demise comes barely a week after he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at a Nairobi hospital. He had previously undergone treatment at home for several days.

Born on December 22, 1961, Chebukati was an accomplished legal professional and public servant. He attended Lenana High School in Nairobi before pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Law at the University of Nairobi (UoN). He later earned a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).

Chebukati served as the IEBC Chairperson for six years, retiring in 2023. During his tenure, he presided over the highly contested general elections in 2022.

He married his wife, Mary Chebukati, in 1990, and together they were blessed with three children: two sons, Jonathan and Emmanuel, and a daughter, Rachael.
