‘CASTING DIRECTORS ARE LAZY’ ACTOR DEDAN JUMA SPEAKS OUT AGAINST TYPECASTING

By  |

Renowned Kenyan actor Dedan Juma, celebrated for his gripping performances as a gangster in Showmax’s Pepeta and Netflix’s Kash Money, has called out casting directors for limiting actors to stereotypical roles.

In a candid interview on Buzz Central Podcast with Cheptoek Boyo, Juma expressed frustration over being repeatedly cast as a criminal, despite his versatility as a performer.

Some casting directors are lazy,” he stated. “When an actor convinces you they can play a certain role, it means they can do others too. In international series, you see someone who played a gangster later delivering an amazing performance as a pastor. But in Kenya, we box talent and never give them a chance to explore.

Juma, who has spent over a decade in the industry, revealed that despite his dedication, he is rarely considered for diverse characters. I can’t refuse these roles because I need the work, but it’s frustrating when, after 10 years, people still only see me as a robber or gangster,” he admitted.

He shared his desire to break free from typecasting, naming two dream roles he is eager to take on: A Manipulative Pastor, “I’ve observed such pastors for years and believe I can portray one in a unique, compelling way.A Mentally Challenged Person, “It’s a complex, layered role that would challenge me as an actor.”
