Renowned Kenyan entrepreneur, and musician Esther Akoth, popularly known as Akothee, has disclosed the reason why had frequent hospital visits in the past.

Taking to social media, Akothee said they were linked to emotional and psychological stress caused by carrying the burdens of others while neglecting herself.

I used to carry everyone on my back and completely forgot about myself,” she confessed. “I thought I could fix my family and everyone around me. I believed I could change my relatives’ attitudes and the way they treated me. I yearned for love and acceptance, but instead, I was often seen as just a money machine and a stepping stone.

Akothee described how the constant pressure led to exhaustion, depression, and repeated health crises. “I came to the painful realisation that, to many, I was just a money machine and a stepping stone. I kept making hospital visits, wondering what was eating me from the inside. I would suddenly feel drained, toxic, suffocated, exhausted, and deeply alone. Depression would creep in without warning.”

She also reflected on past relationships, including her break up with Nelly Oaks, “Every time I was hospitalised, it was just me and Nelly Oaks in that room. Sometimes, even minor arguments would make me feel like my relationship was the root of all my pain. But I hadn’t taken the time to truly understand what was destroying me,” she said.

Adding, “Breaking up with Nelly and falling into the hands of a narcissist was another painful but powerful lesson, that phase educated me and that was a blessing in disguise, I learnt a lot about gaslighting, manipulation and emotional abuse.

The turning point came after a major family fallout in 2022–2023, which forced her to establish firm boundaries. “That fight, though intense, was educational. It opened my eyes and helped me build boundaries that brought me lasting peace,” she shared.

Now, Akothee enjoys a life free from unnecessary stress and emotional triggers. “Now, my life feels fresh and light. I live without having to explain myself.” she expressed.
