‘RADICALISATION OF LEARNERS THROUGH DRAMA IS UNACCEPTABLE’ SAYS PHILIP ETALE

Philip Etale, Director of Communication for the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), has strongly criticised the misuse of educational platforms to push divisive agendas.

Radicalization of learners through drama and creative arts is unacceptable. Students should be nurtured with values that build unity, not weaponized to settle personal grievances,” stated Etale.

The remarks follow escalating tensions over Echoes of War, a controversial production by Butere Girls High School, set to debut at the Kenya National Drama Festivals in Nakuru County. The play has ignited fierce debate, with critics alleging it contains veiled attacks on the government.

On Wednesday evening, law enforcement officers surrounded a vehicle linked to Cleophas Malala, the play’s author and former Kakamega Senator, near Kirobon Girls High School. Reports indicate authorities sought to block his access to final rehearsals ahead of Thursday’s scheduled performance at Lions Primary School.

Echoes of War faced abrupt disqualification during the Western Region Drama Festivals before a High Court intervention reinstated it, mandating its inclusion in the national showcase. The ruling forced Butere Girls to recall students from holiday for last-minute preparations though its not clear whether rehearsals proceeded as intended.
