“The world is so superficial. Everything is about how things look,” Rono stated. “If it’s a man, it’s what you can provide. If it’s a woman, it’s what you look like. For men, it can be looks, but you also need resources. I used to think this was just about dating, no, it’s the entire industry.”

Drawing from her experiences interacting with models, call girls, and escorts, Rono revealed the truth behind society’s obsession with appearances. “When I realised I was trapped in the matrix of the human condition where only the eye matters, where attractiveness and materialism dictate worth, it shook me,” she shared.

She also explained how society treats individuals based on their desirability. “A light-skinned woman can tell a man, ‘I killed my last husband,’ and he’ll say, ‘It’s okay, I still like you.’ She can say, ‘I have three kids by different men,’ and he’ll reply, ‘No problem.’ She can even admit, ‘I might have an STD,’ and he’ll say, ‘We’ll figure it out.’ But let a Black woman a dark-skinned woman say, ‘I want a man who respects me,’ and suddenly, the response is, ‘Who do you think you are?’”

Chebet now wants people around her who are not superficial, “I’ve reached a point where I want people around me who see beyond materialism people who would show up for me even if acid is poured in my face because they value who I am, not what I look like.”
