TV PRODUCER GRACE KAHAKI CALLS OUT GOVERNMENT FOR FAILING KENYAN FILMMAKERS
Award-winning TV producer Grace Khaki has critiqued the government over lack of support for filmmakers.
Speaking in an interview on Buzz Central Podcast with Cheptoek Boyo. The Single Kiasi and Kash Money co-producer pulled no punches in describing the uphill battle facing creatives. “I think they can do better,” Kahaki stated. “The younger generation studying film sees us succeeding, but we got zero assistance from the government. We’ve had to scratch to get here.“
The Insignia Productions co-founder revealed the exhausting reality of securing funding. “For Kash Money, we knocked on so many doors and got so many ‘no’s. The creative arts bodies make it impossible to even know who to approach. There’s no awareness, they don’t reach out to tell us what funds exist.”
Kahaki highlighted the bureaucratic disconnect, “If we wanted to self-fund Kash Money, we wouldn’t know where to start. The easiest option is to go to banks for loans. It feels government bodies are more political than actually supporting creative arts or addressing people’s needs.”
