AKOTHEE FORGIVES SISTER CEBBIE KOKS AFTER BETRAYAL
Renowned Kenyan artiste Esther Akoth, popularly known as Akothee, has publicly forgiven her younger sister, Elseba ‘Cebbie’ Kokeyo, in an open letter shared on her social media platforms.
In the letter, Akothee reflects on years of unspoken pain, betrayal, and the weight of protecting her sister while suffering emotional wounds. She reveals how she silently bore the hurt caused by her sister’s actions, choosing to mask her pain with laughter and silence for the sake of family unity. “I want my mom and me to be at peace so I took this bold scary step. I welcomed you back without telling you how deeply your actions bruised me. How you threw me to the world without armour. How I stood alone, battling narratives I never wrote, while you my own blood watched, spoke, and walked away.“
Akothee acknowledges introducing her sister to a world of fame, only for that same world to distort their relationship. “I introduced you to a world of fame you were never prepared for, and sadly, you let that world shape how you saw me, your sister. You spoke of me in ways that cut deeper than any stranger ever could. Yet even then, I didn’t stop loving you. I only saw you as a rebellious child, one who had lost their way in the noise of applause.”
The musician said her decision to forgive is not as an act of weakness, but as an empowered choice for her own peace and mental well-being. “It’s taken me years of silence, of deep self-work, and painful maturity to understand what forgiveness truly means. It is not weakness, it is power. And for the sake of my freedom, my mental health, and the joy of our mother, I have chosen to forgive you Elseba.”
Though she expressed disappointment that her sister never publicly acknowledged her mistakes, Akothee extended an invitation to heal together, “Let us not pretend nothing happened. Let us not sweep betrayal under the rug and call it peace.”
