Popular musician Bien Baraza, who is currently captivating audiences on his U.S. tour, has opened up on the struggles of East African artists getting global recognition.

Speaking during a recent interview with The Breakfast ClubBien addressed the region’s underrepresentation globally, “Any music you hear in the West exists because of marketing dollars. East Africa hasn’t had that spotlight, but our time is coming. After North, West, and South, we’re next.” Adding, “When you win in the U.S., you win the world. My job is to pave the way for the next generation.”

He also spoke candidly about the challenges of being an East African musician, “No one is looking for musicians but athletes and runners. My job is to pave the way for my kids to come and show you what East African music is all about. It’s a challenge but also comes with a blessing because I will be the token East Africa

Recalling a childhood of being a musician, Bien shared, At six years old, I told my cousin I’d be a superstar. She laughed, but I remind her up to date: this was always written.”

He also revealed his deep connection to his rooster, “A rooster is my cultural totem because it’s a time keeper, caregiver, and security for your home. Its many things including a good meal.“
