Popular Kenyan comedian Bashir Halaiki has shut down claims that all comedians are broke. Speaking in an interview with Cheptoek Boyo on Buzz Central Podcast, Halaiki addressed the financial realities of comedians.

He acknowledged that comedians earn good money but the lack of structure in the industry can lead to financial mismanagement. “The problem isn’t the pay it’s the discipline. We perform at clubs and events, but the environment isn’t always conducive for growth.”

Unlike traditional 9-to-5 jobs, comedy offers flexibility, I admire my friends with office jobs because they have a routine. For us, if we want to drink on a Monday, no one questions us. That lack of structure can be dangerous.”

Halaiki challenged the stigma that comedians are perpetually struggling. People think that comedians are broke and that’s the one of the worst things attached to being a comedian.”
