Kenyan filmmaker Edwin Nyongesa, popularly known as Edu Gee, has released his latest cinematic masterpiece, On Air, a high-stakes thriller based on the shocking true events of a botched Nairobi robbery that spiralled into a dramatic hostage standoff in 2010.

The film revisits the harrowing incident where a gang attempted to rob an M-Pesa shop, only for their plan to go terribly wrong. Forced to flee, one of the robbers took refuge in Pioneer Estate, holding residents hostage in a tense siege that lasted hours.

In a surreal twist, the armed fugitive called Ghetto Radio live on air, calmly engaging with presenters as police surrounded the house. The standoff ended in a fierce shootout with the Recce Squad, culminating in the robber’s death.

On Air takes a unique approach by dramatising the events from the radio presenters’ perspective, blending real-life audio with cinematic intensity.

Edu Gee masterfully reconstructs the chaos, fear, and psychological tension of that fateful day, offering audiences a gripping narrative anchored in true crime.
