Member of Parliament Hon. Beatrice Elachi has opened up about her most painful experience with social media, when online users discussed the death of her son.

In an emotional revelation, the outspoken legislator shared, “My worst experience was when they talked about my son, who nobody knew. That was my worst. Thank God, I don’t read social media,” she said.

The politician further explained how her son tragically lost his life in a car accident after dropping off his friends, “The young man left his home at 10:30 PM to go help others. He finished assisting them, dropped them safely, and was just coming home… I asked myself, ‘God, what if they had all been in the car? What would have happened?’”

Hon. Elachi recounted how family members informed her of things Kenyans were discussing online about her son, “Sometimes families come to you and give you a story, and you’re wondering, it’s already on social media. Everyone kept telling me, and I thanked God I never read those posts.”

The MP also shared her distress over how society treats grieving politician families, citing the children of the late Hon. Were as an example. “The worst was when we were walking a journey with the children of the late honourable Were, and I was like where is Kenya’s humanity? It does not matter. He is dead.”

Adding, “Why would we discuss his children when they go back to school? What happens to these children? Does anyone ever think that everyone now looks at you and wonders, who is your father? Do you imagine those young girls in primary and high school? How do they feel when they go back? It was the most saddest thing.
