A heated political and cultural controversy has erupted after Deputy President Kithure Kindiki hosted a group of prominent Kikuyu musicians at his Karen residence on March 23, 2025

The meeting, which included musicians Samidoh Muchoki, Jose Gatutura, Ben Githae, Karangu Muraya, and DJ Fatxo, has drawn sharp criticism from former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who has branded the artists as “wasaliti wa jamii (traitors of the community).

Gachagua accused the musicians of betraying their community by engaging with DP Kindiki, “If they do not apologise, we’ll stop listening to their music. Clubs should stop inviting them. Online, just unfollow them,” Gachagua declared.

In a statement on his X account, Deputy President Kindiki clarified that the gathering was focused on supporting Kenya’s creative industryThe creative industry is a multibillion-shilling business, and constant engagement with artists is imperative to support them through policy and intellectual property protection,” Kindiki stated. He was joined by several MPs, including Alice Ng’ang’a (Thika Town), John Njuguna Wanjiku (Kiambaa), Mburu Kahangara (Lari), Elijah Njoroge (Gatundu North), and Githua Wamacukuru (Kabete).
