AFRICAN STREAM ANNOUNCES SHUTDOWN AFTER CENSORSHIP AND SMEAR CAMPAIGNS
Pan-African media platform, African Stream announces its closure effective July 1, 2025, following attacks, censorship, and financial suffocation by major tech platforms and Western institutions.
African Stream a bold, Pan-African media voice since 2022 has faced relentless suppression since September 13, 2024, when former U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken labeled the outlet “Kremlin propagandists.” Within days, YouTube, Meta (Facebook/Instagram), Google, and TikTok banned African Stream’s accounts, while X (Twitter) demonetised the platform.
Personal accounts of team members were also restricted, crippling operations. “This was not a choice it was a forced surrender,” the team shared. “They silenced us, but the truth we stood for remains.”
African Stream dedicated itself to challenging imperialist narratives about Africa, exposing underreported stories, and rejecting the erasure of colonialism, neo-colonialism, and imperialism from Africa’s development discourse. Despite zero evidence of disinformation, the media platform said the Western outlets like NBC and Voice of America smeared the platform simply for reporting facts, such as U.S. drone strikes in Somalia.
“We grew stronger with every attack, but the financial blockade left us no path forward,” the statement continued. “We’re proud of what we achieved: giving Africa a voice it deserves.”
African Stream will cease regular updates after July 1, 2025, with only a few remaining documentaries on Liberia and Mali to be released. The team urges supporters to keep the Pan-African spirit alive, “With your support, we managed to ruffle many feathers. Please continue the fight and keep the Pan-African flag flying. Thank you for helping us build African Stream. As we always say: #WeAreAllAfricanStream.”
