CONTROVERSIAL TELEVANGELIST BISHOP GILBERT DEYA DIES IN TRAGIC ROAD ACCIDENT
Controversial televangelist Bishop Gilbert Deya has died in a road accident along the Kisumu-Bondo highway. The Tuesday evening crash near Kit Mikayi claimed the life of the 72-year-old preacher and left 15 Moi University students with varying degrees of injuries.
Eyewitness accounts and preliminary police reports paint a harrowing picture of the moments leading to the collision. Bishop Deya was behind the wheel of his Toyota Noah, reportedly lost control of his vehicle, causing it to veer dangerously into the path of an oncoming Moi University bus. The bus driver’s desperate attempt to avoid a head-on collision resulted in the vehicle overturning, while Deya’s car subsequently smashed into a Siaya County Government Toyota Fortuner. The chaotic scene left twisted metal and shattered glass strewn across the busy highway.

Tragically, Bishop Deya died instantly from the impact. His body was transported to Kombewa Sub-County Hospital mortuary, while his wife and another female passenger in his vehicle escaped with minor injuries. The university bus, which had been transporting students at the time of the accident, became the epicenter of the disaster – with 13 students sustaining serious injuries and two others suffering minor wounds. Medical teams rushed the most critically injured to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu for emergency treatment.
The collision also involved Siaya County Executive Committee Member for Roads George Nying’iro and his driver, who survived the impact with only minor injuries. As investigators comb through the wreckage and interview witnesses, disturbing accounts have emerged of the bus rolling multiple times before coming to rest on its roof, with terrified students scrambling to escape the mangled vehicle.
Bishop Deya’s death marks the sudden end of a controversial religious career that spanned decades. The self-proclaimed miracle worker first gained international notoriety in the early 2000s for his controversial “miracle babies” ministry, which ultimately led to his extradition from the UK to face child trafficking charges in Kenya. Deya maintained a loyal following and continued his televangelism work until his untimely death.
