FAITH KIPYEGON SET TO MAKE HISTORY, TARGETS SUB-4-MINUTE MILE IN PARIS

Olympic champion and world record-holder Faith Kipyegon is about to rewrite history on June 26,  as she attempts to become the first woman in history to run a mile in under four minutes

The historic attempt, dubbed The 4-Minute Mile Challenge, will take place in Paris on June 26. Since Sir Roger Bannister first broke the four-minute mile in 1954, over 2,000 men have achieved the feat. Yet, no woman has ever come close until now. Kipyegon, the reigning three-time Olympic 1500m champion and current women’s mile world record holder (4:07.64), will need to slash an unprecedented 7.65 seconds off her personal best to make history.

In preparation for this milestone, Nike has unveiled a revolutionary performance kit under its Breaking4 initiative, engineered to maximise Kipyegon’s speed and efficiency. The bespoke design includes: A 3D-printed sports bra for optimal support and aerodynamics, a  precision-engineered full-body suit to minimise drag, custom arm and leg sleevesheadband, and running spikes and advanced materials to enhance power output and reduce fatigue.

The initiative, spearheaded by her sponsors Nike, has been backed by the newly launched women-only track and field league ATHLOS, which has placed a Sh13 million ($100,000) incentive on the line for the 31-year-old Kenyan.
