PROTESTERS GATHER AT CENTRAL POLICE STATION CHANTING WANTAM!
Riot police fired teargas today to disperse protesters at Nairobi’s Central Police Station, where teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang died in custody.
The demonstration marked the anniversary of last year’s Finance Bill protests that swept Kenya. Chanting Wantam! hundreds gathered to demand justice for Ojwang. The protest comes as the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) approved murder charges against six individuals connected to Ojwang’s killing. Those charged include: OCS Samson Kiprotich Talaam, Police Constable James Mukhwana, Peter Kimani and three civilians allegedly hired to assist in the assault.
In a shocking confession, PC Mukhwana admitted his involvement but claimed he acted on orders from senior officers, including DIG Eliud Lagat. Investigators say Mukhwana deleted phone communications with his superiors after the killing. Ojwang, 34, was arrested in Homa Bay on June 8, 2024, for social media posts. He died hours later from severe blunt force trauma sustained at Central Police Station, according to autopsy reports.
The suspects were arraigned at Kibera High Court on June 23. If convicted, they face life imprisonment under Kenya’s Penal Code. Security remained tight across Nairobi today, with special police units deployed to key government buildings.
