REAL REASON WHY TY NGACHIRA’S NTV SHOW TOO MUCH INFORMATION WAS CANCELLED
Comedian and lawyer TY Ngachira has revealed the untold story behind the abrupt end of his popular NTV show, Too Much Information, during a candid interview on the Buzz Central Podcast with Cheptoek Boyo.
Ngachira explained that the show came to life after international researchers scouting Kenyan comedians identified him as the perfect fit. “I got the gig because someone in the US was doing research on Kenyan comedians, and they interviewed me. They wanted a show that blended governance, law, and humor and it just so happened that was exactly what I did professionally and after work. They said, ‘We have the guy for the job,’” Ngachira shared.
The show’s cancellation, however, was linked to external factors beyond the Kenyan team’s control. “Remember the #MeToo movement in the US? One of our executive producers got caught up in that, and all funding associated with him was cut off. In Kenya, we suffered for something that wasn’t our mistake,” Ngachira revealed.
He further explained the financial dynamics that made the show viable, “A lot of mainstream media is struggling financially, and they liked our model, they didn’t pay us, and we didn’t pay them. They gave us a nice spot and took advert money, we handled our own production costs. It was a win-win. But when it was time to renew for Season 2, the funding crisis hit.”
Despite initial skepticism, the political satire show eventually won over audiences. “The backlash we got was early on. People were like, ‘Who is this guy? That money should have gone to Dr. King’ori for his show!’ They didn’t understand what we were doing at first, especially since we took the Churchill Show’s time slot, and he’s a beloved figure. But eventually, people really started loving the show,” Ngachira recalled.
