GEORGE RUTO’S SUPPORT FOR MATATU CULTURE DOESN’T MEAN IT ENDORSES THE REGIME-OCTOPIZZO

Rapper Octopizzo has hailed matatu culture as an influential force in Kenya’s creative economy. What began as a public transport system has grown into a thriving ecosystem of art, music, design and entrepreneurship, providing livelihoods for thousands of young Kenyans.

From graffiti artists and sound engineers to digital content creators, deejays and custom interior fabricators, the matatu industry has become a legitimate space for innovation and self-expression. “What was once seen as chaotic and informal is now being recognized as a hub of street creativity, innovation, and cultural identity.”

Octopizzo also said that while president’s son George Ruto may support and appreciate matatu culture, the culture itself remains politically neutral. “while individuals like George Ruto support and appreciate matatu culture, this doesn’t automatically mean the culture endorses the political regime,” he stated. “Ma3 Culture is a reflection of the people, complex, independent, and often resistant to co-option.

Still, he acknowledged him engaging with youth culture authentically. “Still, it’s encouraging to see young lads like George Ruto not only in touch with but also proudly standing behind a culture that he genuinely understands and loves. His support represents a bridge, not control and it’s a sign of progress when leaders recognize and celebrate the raw, authentic expressions of Kenya’s urban youth..”

Octopizzo’s comments follows Nganya Fest, held at KICC on July 18, where thousands of fans gathered to celebrate matatu culture and the launch of George Ruto’s new matatu, Mood. The event was a vibrant showcase of Arbantone music, street fashion, and matatu artistry, proving the enduring influence of Nairobi’s urban youth culture.

Over the past decades, matatus have transformed into mobile galleries of creativity, blending transport with showmanship and street credibility.
