Singer-songwriter Nviiri The Storyteller has endorsed National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) proposal to prohibit influencers and celebrities from advertising alcohol.

The artist revealed his regret over participating in an alcohol promotion campaign in Kayole, where he witnessed firsthand the community’s pressing needs for basic necessities rather than alcoholic beverages. “The day I did a promo for alcohol in Kayole, I was sad to learn that people would prefer food, money, or jobs,” Nviiri confessed. “It ended up being my last time engaging in such work.”

In a statement, Nviiri called on fellow artists and influencers to reject exploitative marketing tactics. “Whatever cannot uplift your fellow person, do not deceive them into thinking it’s good!” he added.

The singer shared the importance of integrity in the creative industry, reminding artists that their work carries deeper meaning beyond financial gain. “With these few words, artists, let us remember to live in truth,” he said. “If you believe music pays, stop selling everything just for your own gain. Show those who will come after us that art is a blessing and has meaning not just business.”

While supporting NACADA’s efforts to regulate alcohol advertising, Nviiri also talked about the need for artists to have a formal voice in policy-making. “Finally, we need a body, committee, or guild for artists, by artists, to be part of this government and help make decisions concerning the creative scene,” he concluded.
