Kenyan actor Paul Ogola, who recently joined the U.S. Marine marked his 35th birthdayOgola reflects on a year that he describes as a “furnace,” detailing his gruelling journey as a new U.S. Marine and the heartbreaking loss of his father, which happened while he was thousands of miles away.

After relocating from Kenya to the United States and enlisting in the Marine Corps, he was thrust into a life designed to test human limits. “34 was a furnace. Not just the desert sun, but life itself,” Ogola stated. “50+ days under 110° heat with at least 60lbs of weight on me. 14+ hours a day grind. Sleeping under rains, thunder and lightning. Bone and willpower tested.”

Yet, the most brutal test wasn’t physical. The ultimate challenge came mid-year when he received news of his father’s death and the heaviest blow was “attending my father’s burial through a screen. Yeah! Log in to an app so that you can watch the burialThat carved lessons deeper than any training could.

Now, as he turns 35, his perspective is not one of a man seeking an easy path, “Strength to keep becoming. Tempered by fire. Softened by love. Sharpened by purposeAnd through it all, I remain grateful. For love that carries me, for family that grounds me, and for life itself…for giving me another chance to grow. Happy Birthday to me!” he wrote.
