GOVERNMENT INCENTIVES MUST BENEFIT ALL NATIONAL TEAMS SAYS DENNIS OMBACHI
Food content creator and former Kenya Sevens rugby player Dennis Ombachi has weighed in on the recent incentives promised to Harambee Stars players, calling for structured frameworks to ensure all national team athletes benefit equally.
Ombachi said there is a need for sustainable systems in Kenyan sports. “Incentives for national teams are good, but structures have to be put in place with deliverable frameworks across all competing disciplines whether it’s basketball, table tennis, or any other sport so that everyone benefits from the same kitty run through the Ministry of Sports,” Ombachi said.
He added, “One of the most demoralising things as an athlete competing internationally is seeing the difference in quality of life between Kenyan players and their peers from other nations. Without proper structures, there’s no sustainability, unfortunately.”
Ombachi’s remarks come as President William Ruto announced new rewards for Harambee Stars players ahead of their African Nations Championships (CHAN 2024) match against Zambia.
Speaking on Monday, August 11, at the Pullman Hotel, Upper Hill, Nairobi, the President reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the team following their stunning 1-0 victory against Morocco at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
Ruto had initially promised Ksh1 million per player for each group-stage win but upped the stakes, pledging: Ksh2.5 million per player if they defeat Zambia in their final Group match, Ksh1 million per player plus an affordable housing unit if they advance to the quarter-finals.
