GOVERNMENT RELEASES SH42 MILLION REWARD TO HARAMBEE STARS AFTER DRC WIN
The Kenyan government has disbursed Ksh42 million to the Harambee Stars following their 1-0 triumph over the Democratic Republic of Congo in their opening match of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Sunday, August 3.
This comes after President William Ruto’s pledge to award each player Ksh1 million per tournament win. With 27 players in the squad, questions arose about whether all would receive the promised amount.
On Monday, August 4, State House spokesperson Hussein Mohammed confirmed the full payment, clarifying that all players including reserves and substitutes would receive Ksh1 million each, alongside 15 technical bench members.
“President William Ruto has fulfilled his commitment to pay KSh1 million each to all 27 Harambee Stars players and 15 members of the technical bench, a total of KSh42 million, following the national team’s 1-0 win over the DRC on Sunday,” the statement read in part.

Mohammed further stated that another win against Angola in their second group match on Thursday, August 7, would get an another payout. “Sports ministry officials led by Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya delivered the funds, and a similar reward awaits the team after Thursday’s game against Angola.”
The team, under coach Benni McCarthy, will face Angola next, followed by a tough encounter against Morocco on August 10, before concluding the group stage against Zambia on August 17.
