GOVERNOR WANGA NAMES STREET AFTER HERSELF

Homa Bay County Governor Gladys Wanga has caused mixed reactions after unveiling newly named streets in the county, with some designations honouring local political figures including a road bearing her own name

The move comes as the county prepares to host the national Devolution Conference from August 12–15, 2025. The renamed roads include Gladys Wanga Street, Ong’ondo Were Street and Orwa Ojode Street, among others. Governor Wanga had initiated public participation in April, pledging to incorporate residents’ suggestions to reflect the county’s cultural heritage and values. “These names recognise leaders and individuals who’ve shaped our county’s progress,” Wanga stated.

While some citizens applauded the tributes, others demanded additional recognition. Kopany Sepp Blatter, a Facebook commentator, urged the county to honour former Homabay Town MP Peter Kaluma, “We demand Kaluma Avenue for his transformative leadership. Roads like Nyada Ralek and Dr. Odhiambo Mbai Road should also be considered.”

Nyar Agweng praised the memorialisation of late Ndhiwa legislator Joshua Orwa Ojode, calling it a “noble gesture” for the constituency. “Gladys Wanga  has made a noble and historic decision to name the street connecting Bank Road to the main Kindubay–Rodi Highway, through the well-known Nyanza Guest House, after our fallen icon.”
