The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has directed 107 bars, clubs, lounges and restaurants across the country to provide proof of environmental compliance within seven days or face immediate closure.

The directive follows a wave of public complaints concerning excessive noise pollution from entertainment establishments. In a public notice issued on Monday, NEMA stated that despite previous orders, a majority of the named facilities have failed to furnish the authority with the required legal documents.

Affected businesses, which include well-known venues such as Bar Next Door, Kettle House, Quiver Lounge and Habanos Lounge, are required to submit a suite of compliance documents. These include a valid Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) license, a current Environmental Audit (EA) report, and a certificate of incorporation.

Furthermore, they must formally explain why legal action should not be taken against them and provide a detailed account of the noise control measures they have implemented.

NEMA has been receiving public noise pollution complaints from the public regarding clubs, lounges, bars, and restaurants across the country. Several facilities have been served with Environmental Restoration Orders but have failed to comply,” read the statement.
