BLOOD MOON CAPTIVATES KENYAN SKY-WATCHERS DURING LUNAR ECLIPSE

Sky-gazers across Kenya were treated to a breathtaking spectacle on the night of September 7-8, 2025, as a total lunar eclipse transformed the moon into a deep red Blood Moon.”

The five-hour event, which peaked with a totality lasting 82 minutes, was visible across Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. In Kenya, enthusiasts from amateur astronomers to casual observers looked to the skies to witness the moon slowly darken and then glow with a characteristic coppery-red hue. This striking effect is caused by Rayleigh scattering, the same phenomenon that creates vivid sunrises and sunsets where Earth’s atmosphere filters out blue light and bends red sunlight onto the lunar surface.

The event sparked excitement and sharing across social media platforms. From photographers capturing the event from their backyards to major organisations. Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko shared his experience, stating, “It was so awesome. At 9.10 the moon was fully red. We released anything bad in our lives and that bad energy left our bodies. We forgive those who hurt us and ask for forgiveness for those we have hurt… Live positively… God willing the next lunar eclipse will re-occur again in December 2028.

Official accounts like the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) also joined in, posting a stunning image of the event with the caption, “The Blood Moon, glowing above the skies of Samburu. #LunarEclipse.”

Meanwhile, local enthusiasts like user Abaz reported, “I captured the Lunar Eclipse of the moon from my backyard,” As observer Muhammad Onyango noted, the spectacle gradually concluded as “The eclipse is fading. The moon is slowly regaining its glow.
