BONIFACE MWANGI ADVOCATES FOR REHABILITATION OF TEEN ARRESTED FOR DESECRATING KENYAN FLAG
Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi has issued a statement regarding the arrest of 17-year-old Ibrahim Haidar Yusuf, who was apprehended by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for his alleged involvement in the desecration of the national flag during a football match on September 20, 2025.
Mwangi said that the punishment must be proportionate, especially when dealing with a minor. “Haidar Yusuf is a minor, and I hope he will be treated as such. The criminal justice system should be rehabilitative, not punitive, for a petty offender like him.”
The incident occurred at Nyayo Stadium during a match between Kenya Police FC and Mogadishu City Club, where two individuals were captured on camera disrespecting the Kenyan flag. The DCI has cited Section 2B of The National Flag, Emblems & Names Act, which criminalises disrespect towards national symbols.
