MASHIRIMA KAPOMBE REVEALS EX-PARTNER REFUSED TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR SON
Renowned TV journalist and presenter Mashirima Kapombe has publicly shared her journey of becoming a single mother, revealing that the father of her son, actor Kazungu Matano popularly known as Captain Otoyo, refused to take responsibility for the pregnancy.
Speaking in an interview on Bahari FM, Kapombe detailed the challenging experience, which began when she was 24 years old. She described the period as “really disappointing” for her parents but also a learning experience for her entire family.
“I gave birth outside of wedlock… It educated me, as a young lady at the time, you can be very naive,” she reflected. “Mum used to say I was too young, I had not experienced life to know things about men. As you grow older you realise the world is not like you know.“

The media personality said she received support from her parents during the difficult time. When her father inquired about the baby daddy’s position on the pregnancy, she did not have an answer. Her parents advised her that a man unwilling to take responsibility was “not a good man” and gave her the choice to either be with him or stay with them.
“It didn’t take long for me to make that decision, I had to plan for the delivery,” Kapombe stated. Her decision was rooted in her values. “I believe in respect, faithfulness, loyalty and if that is not forthcoming… then there is no future. I don’t think it was going to work and I would rather trust my family, and they have been fantastic.”
Kapombe now advocates for better education for young women, “we need to teach them to understand more what true love really looks like” and the importance of financial independence.
