AMBER RAY SUPPORTS THE AMENDMENT OF CYBERCRIME BILL
Kenyan socialite and influencer Amber Ray has extended her support for the government’s recently passed Cybercrime Amendment Bill.
In a candid statement shared on her social media platforms, Amber said that her comment comes from a place of personal reflection. Addressing the toxic culture online, she stated, “In a world where digital platforms have become our second homes, where words travel faster than action, it’s more important than ever to remember that freedom of speech should never be an excuse for cruelty, defamation, or disrespect.“
She opened up on the impact of cyberbullying and online harassment, noting, “We’ve seen it too many times …good people torn down, families broken, lives lost ….not by weapons, but by words.” Adding, “illusion of power without consequence,” causing many to forget the human being behind every profile.
She compared the need for online boundaries to the traffic laws that govern the roads, stating, “I believe in free expression ….it’s a cornerstone of democracy. But true freedom comes with responsibility. We can’t keep normalising insults, cyberbullying, false accusations, and online violence in the name of ‘opinion.‘”
Amber was quick to clarify that the legislation is not an attack on free speech, but a necessary measure for protection. “This amendment is not about silencing voices ….it’s about protecting them. Protecting our children, our mothers, our peers. It’s about reminding us that decency doesn’t end when we log in.”
She called for a more humane digital environment, “Let’s speak, let’s question, let’s even challenge …but let’s never forget to be human in the process. Freedom of speech is powerful. But power without conscience is dangerous.”
