AMERICAN MAN WANTED FOR MURDER ARRESTED IN KENYA AFTER 15-YEAR MANHUNT

A man accused of a Miami murder from 15 years ago was recently returned to Florida to face charges.

Nicolas Soares, 34, appeared in a South Florida courtroom on October 16. He is now formally charged with second-degree murder and armed robbery in connection with a September 2010 fatal shooting.

The Miami Police Department’s arrest warrant states that Soares, who was 19 at the time, went to Herbert Caniza’s home intending to rob him of cash and marijuana. Upon Caniza opening the front door, Soares allegedly shot him in the chest before fleeing the scene.

Investigators determined that Soares planned the robbery because he needed more marijuana to sell and was seeking additional funds. A witness, located by detectives, corroborated details of the planned robbery, the motive, and how Soares had acquired the firearm used in the crime.

The arrest form also notes that detectives interviewed Soares’ mother, who revealed her son had contacted her saying he was in danger and needed to leave the area immediately. She subsequently arranged travel for him to Brazil to stay with relatives.

Although an arrest warrant was issued in March, Soares was not taken into custody until this past Wednesday. Miami police reported collaborating with federal agencies to locate and arrest him in Nairobi, Kenya. Soares is now being held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
