Internationally acclaimed American singer Kelis took to social media to offer her honest perspective on the realities of living in Kenya.

In a recent online video, Kelis was quick to affirm her love for Kenya, calling it “still one of the best countries on the continent,” while detailing some of the challenges she has encountered. She clarified that her observations are not a comparison to America, but a resource to help others prepare.

The roads. Some of the potholes will literally take your car apart,Kelis noted. She specifically pointed to unmarked speed bumps that appear “in the dark” and a drainage system that leads to flooding during rainy season.

Another major concern she raised is waste management. “The waste management here is trash, it’s absolutely awful. It doesn’t exist.” For those accustomed to a Western lifestyle, Kelis warned that maintaining it comes at a steep premium. “If you want to live like an American here, it’s definitely gonna cost you triple the price,” she explained, citing the high cost of imported goods from the US and Europe.

She also described the car market as an “absolute nightmare,” where decades-old imported vehicles with untranslatable Japanese digital systems are sold at new-car prices.
