Digital creator and art director Muthoni Gitau has bravely come forward to share her experience as a survivor of rape, revealing this is the second time it has happened.

In a public statement, Gitau detailed her personal trauma and the gruelling process of seeking justice, Gitau shared a copy of her Post Rape Care Form and police OB number 37/12/5/25. She described the immediate aftermath, stating, “For the first 24hrs I didn’t shower… I knew what had happened to me and I gaslit myself. I tried to convince myself that it didn’t happen, even when my body was having such a strong reaction.

Her account detailed the physical and psychological toll of the assault. “The days that followed were gruelling,Gitau shared. “It was 3 days of going back and forth between the hospital and the police station. 30 days of an alarm that would go off every day at 9pm to take a pill. A reminder of what had happened.

She revealed the overwhelming number of cases, noting she was case number 730 in that facility since the beginning of the year. “Multiple therapy sessions, 4 different doctor’s visits and months of waiting to see if reporting actually does anything. In my case, it doesn’t,” she stated.

Despite the pain, which she noted “I’ve taken a lot of time to deal with this happening to me for a second time. It probably hurts more this time round too,Gitau said that her healing is “slow but steady.” In the time since the assault, she has been volunteering, writing, and has completed a play scheduled to be staged next year.
