WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY HONOUR LEGENDARY KENYAN ATHLETE HENRY RONO WITH STATUE

Washington State University (WSU) has unveiled a bronze statue to immortalise its legendary alumnus, the late Kenyan distance runner Henry Rono. The tribute honours Rono, who passed away in February 2024, for his collegiate career where he dominated events from the 3,000 to the 10,000 meters.

Rono’s most celebrated achievement was setting four world records within a 81-day period in 1978, bringing international acclaim to the university. The 2.13-meter tall statue, created by WSU alum and sculptor Ott Jones, now stands permanently near the Mooberry Track where Rono once trained

This installation was complemented by a separate honour from the Pullman Chamber of Commerce, which inducted him into their Walk of Fame.

Rono’s legacy continues to inspire a new generation of athletes at WSU, including current Kenyan students Evans Kurui and Solomon Kipchoge. Kurui recently broke a 49-year-old collegiate record, while Kipchoge just won an NCAA championship, demonstrating that Rono’s competitive excellence live on through them.
