YOUR EASY GUIDE TO SELF-SERVICE 4G/5G ROUTER ACTIVATION

Published

on

Get your new Safaricom Home Wi-Fi up and running in just a few minutes with this simple, do-it-yourself guide. No need to wait for a technician!

Before You Start: What You’ll Need

  1. Your new 4G or 5G router (purchased from a Safaricom Shop, dealer, Masoko, or Quickmart).
  2. The SIM card pouch attached to the side of the router box.
  3. Your Safaricom mobile phone (to receive the OTP and scan the QR code).
  4. The power adapter that came with your router.

The 3-Step Activation Process

Step 1: Prepare Your SIM Card & Router

Disable the SIM Card PIN (Crucial First Step!): Remove the SIM from the pouch and insert it into a different phone. Go to Settings > Security & Privacy > Set up SIM card lock (or a similar menu). Toggle the SIM PIN lock to OFF. You may need to enter the default PIN (often 0000 or 1234) to disable it. Once disabled, remove the SIM from the phone.

Set Up Your Router: Locate the SIM card slot on your router (usually on the side or bottom). Carefully insert your SIM card. Plug the router into a power source using the provided adapter. The power light should turn on.

Step 2: Activate Your Account

This is the core DIY process done via the MySafaricom Partner App.

  1. Scan the QR Code: Detach the SIM pouch from the router box. On the back, you’ll find a QR code. Open your smartphone’s camera app and point it at the code. A notification will pop up. Tap it to open the activation link. Tip: If your camera doesn’t scan it, you can download a free QR code scanner app.
  2. Follow the On-Screen Prompts: The link will guide you to register the new line. You will receive a One-Time Password (OTP) on your primary Safaricom number. Enter this OTP to proceed. Accept the terms and conditions to activate your account.
  3. Activation Complete: You will receive an SMS confirmation that your account is active.

Need Help Scanning? A friend or agent can scan the QR code for you. They just need to input your correct details on the ‘complete connection’ screen. The OTP will still be sent to your number.

Step 3: Connect and Enjoy!

On your device phone or laptop, go to the Wi-Fi settings. Look for the Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and password. These are printed on the sticker at the bottom of your router. Select your network, enter the password, and connect. Purchase a data bundle via the Safaricom App or USSD, and you’re all set to enjoy high-speed internet!

Troubleshooting Common Issues

I can’t connect to the Wi-Fi. Check that the SIM PIN is disabled. Ensure you are connecting to the correct network name and using the exact password from the router sticker. Restart the router and your device.

The activation failed or I got an error. Make a note of the error message. Restart the activation process from the beginning. If the problem continues after 3 tries, wait 10 minutes before trying again.

I need to reset my router. Locate the small reset button (a pinhole) on the router. Use a paperclip to press and hold it for about 10 seconds. Note: This will erase all your settings, including your Wi-Fi name and password, and you will need to set it up again.

I lost my SIM card. Contact customer support immediately on 100, 200, or 400 to deactivate the lost SIM. Visit the nearest Safaricom Shop or dealer for a replacement.
